MODERNIZATION AND COMPETITIVENESS AMONG MILK PRODUCTION SYSTEMS

Abstract
This paper examines two questions: a) why do small farmers maintain their activities while earning an income for their labor that is below the opportunity cost? and b) why do these farmers persist in using traditional production techniques, knowing that improved techniques could increase the productivity of their labor and capital? The results of this study indicate that a small farmer may increase his family income more effectively using traditional production techniques that increase the use of family manual labor than by technological modernization that requires capital investments and scale to become profitable.
